| Although
they may slightly vary and cross borders in application, the preceding
talent caliber classifications are basic, dictionary definitions.
Where an individual fits in these categories depends on two factors, natural ability and education. |
|
Everyone is born and God-gifted with talents. We are able to operate in some of our talents effortlessly while we must diligently train and develop in others. Some songwriters are gifted to the degree they need little training and development. Some need moderate training and development. Some need considerable training and development. While a trained, developed songwriter is considered a professional; a songwriter whose natural ability is equivalent may also be considered a professional. Also, as per the dictionary definition, a pro writer who used to write fulltime but has decreased in writing may be considered a semipro, or even an amateur, depending on how little is written and if compensation is received. In the world of music the talent caliber often plays a role in the success or failure of a writer. Writers are perceived, received or rejected per the quality of their music and lyrics, and the quality is dependent upon their training and/or natural ability, or lack thereof. |
| Words
and definitions seem to go through metamorphosis. For example, the word
“gay” means happy, exuberant, or excited. These days, unfortunately,
it is a politically correct, non-offensive definition for homosexuality.
The word “bad” means inadequate, evil, or undesirable, however, in
the 1970’s it became a popular slang definition for - good, great, to
be desired.
Talent caliber definitions have suffered the same fate. Let us take a look at how a lot of folks, these days, especially those in the music business, now view these terms. |

| Not
everyone has a misunderstanding of the caliber definitions but quite a
few do, so, when working with most writers and artists, especially via GSC,
I usually use the modern, metamorphosed definitions.
Although preference, opinion, time and circumstance often play a role in the success or failure of most songs and songwriters, talent caliber is the primary deciding factor. I trust this brief tutorial is helpful. God Bless You, |
